IT Cost Reduction

With the current tool sets available to organizations, how can we better manage our IT costs than we do today? The problem is we really can’t do better with what we have. IT Asset Management tools like Microsoft’s SCCM (SMS), WinINSTALL, Altiris, LanDesk, etc… do provide some efficiencies within IT that we need. Software packaging and distribution, remote control of desktops, patch management, and inventories of software and hardware assets are all beneficial to the organization, but it is difficult, if not impossible to quantify the savings achieved by these activities.

The challenge is to really manage our IT Costs; we have to be able to specifically measure the actual utilization of all our IT assets.

  1. We need a way to precisely analyze the TRUE utilization of our Desktop Computers and Laptops, allowing us to allocate these resources exactly where they are needed.
  2. We have to be able to fully understand how our printers (both local and network) are being used, down to the exact number of pages printed within a certain time frame.
  3. We must have a way to manage our Software License to ensure we are purchasing the correct number of licenses, the appropriate versions and only paying maintenance on the number of licenses being used.
  4. We should eliminate our exposure to external audit from Software vendors and Publishers like Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle and others, by tracking true usage of these applications and deploying the software only where it’s needed and used.
  5. Finally, we should be able to re-allocate unused software (that is already owned) to users that need it, instead of purchasing new.

The only way to go beyond the “efficiencies” of the traditional tools is to add the unique ability to track TRUE usage with Survey from Scalable Software.  With Survey’s ability to track actual Keyboard and Mouse activity with all the applications on a computer, you are able to make informed decisions not possible before.

With Survey you can confidently track true usage and be sure that your software needs and your software bills are optimized – so you can stop gambling with your budget. Survey’s raw data capture of application usage information, is augmented by integration with software purchase history and sophisticated data analysis techniques designed to present the information in a manner that rapidly identifies the areas where license recycling can be most effective.

Survey can quickly pinpoint those users of ‘Professional’ class suites than only need ‘Standard’ versions, and also users of full suites that need only ‘readers’ or ‘reporting’ versions.

Additionally Survey can help save on hardware too. Our usage metering technology pinpoints printer and monitor usage. We can identify printers and monitors that are over and under used. In the case of monitors we track the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) and correlate it with usage to help proactively identify those monitors in need of maintenance renewals etc. Printer information can help organizations get to the correct ration of printers to employees and drive down the cost of consumables.

Integration with Active Directory enables the information to be mapped to the organizational structure with no effort and support for configuration management tools such as Scalable’s WinINSTALL and Microsoft’s SCCM, completing the recycling process.
