On June 2, IAITAM and Scalable Software held a Webinar titled “The Truth about Metering”.  In this webinar Mark Cresswell, CEO of Scalable discussed a holistic approach to software usage metering.

Mark covered the reasons for metering application use including driving down software license fees; ensuring software development and outsourcing arrangements are inline with expectations, planning for OS and application migrations and ensuring policies on the usage of assets are compliant.

The overall webinar theme was software usage metering must be more than a check-box item, software usage metering is gaining a higher profile within an organization and consideration needs to include your entire application portfolio (Web, virtual, traditional and vertical).

Use Case Reviews

The “Truth about Metering” webinar included several use case examples associated with software usage metering including:

  • Software Recycling
    • Ensure only needed application licenses are purchased and maintained
    • Recycle unused licenses to where they are needed most
    • Ensure the correct class of license is obtained
  • Migration Planning
    • Wasting time on compatibility analysis of applications that aren’t required
    • Sizing the target environments to correctly match the demands of the source workloads
  • Outsourcer Management
    • Determine how much time developers and QA personnel spend working on assigned tasks
    • Information can be used as a baseline for improvement discussions with outsourcer
  • Authorized Applications
    • Support for an organizations application and website use policies
    • Support HR with solid, objective evidence of misuse

Mark wrapped up the webinar with a discussion on software usage metering – approach validity and how the approach used impacts use-cases.
