For those that know me you know I am always on the move. No matter what city I am in or mode of transportation (Bus, Train, and Car) I somehow manage to hop around and my laptop is always with me for the ride. When you are out and about that much, it’s not always easy to find a place with free Wi-Fi.
Sure, you can stop at Starbucks or any number of new chains which are increasingly starting to have free Wi-Fi, but they aren’t always convenient.
Enter the high speed world of 4G mobile network.
Having had a few choices, and after some arms reach research, I chose Clear. Clear is backed by a several big companies you might have heard of like Google and Sprint. If you live in an area where Clear has coverage, you’ve probably seen the billboards and commercials promoting the product.
Clear claims that you can stream movies and music on their 4G network without any hiccups, so I decided to give them a try. You can get an USB stick based service for $45/month. I opted to get the stick since my laptop seems to travel where I do most of the time.
Clear 4G Speed
So far, I’m pretty happy with Clear’s speed. I’ve found the USB stick tends to be pretty much the same as the home modems I have had in the past. For regular browsing, I have no complaints about the speed. Streaming video also works very well.
In terms of gaming I wouldn’t know. I haven’t been a big “gamer” so I can’t say one way or another. Overall, I’d give Clear an “A” for speed. It’s fast enough to use as my exclusive home internet and faster than any other mobile internet I have tried.
Clear Coverage in Austin
Overall, there are very few holes in the coverage, and it’s very nice being able to download videos or stream music while on the train or anywhere for that matter. I would give Clear an “A” in the Austin area for coverage.
I can’t speak for the other areas, but if you live in Portland, Seattle, Leas Vegas, Hawaii, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly, Charlotte, Raleigh, Tampa, Miami or pretty much anywhere in Texas (except Lake Travis), you should strongly consider giving Clear a try. The network is only going to expand and get faster.
Pricing
Clear is the most affordable mobile internet option I have found. I have T-Mobile for my Bluetooth and they wanted a whole lot more for their 4G service and device. As mentioned previously I have one USB Stick based service for $45/month and that included the lease on the stick.
